Cooking Measurement Converter

Use this cooking measurement converter to switch kitchen volume measurements between US teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons, plus millilitres and litres. Metric cups (250 mL) and UK imperial fluid ounces and pints are available as clearly labelled options. Enter an amount such as 1, 0.75, or 1 1/2, pick the from-unit and the to-unit, and the page converts through exact millilitres in one step. One US cup is 236.59 mL. This tool converts volume only: cups to grams depends on the ingredient, so it is not done here. This is an everyday kitchen estimate only, not a lab, pharmacy, or medicine-dosing measurement.

Volume only. Decimals, fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (1 1/2) work. Cups to grams needs the ingredient's density, so it is not converted here.

Worked example, 1 US cup to millilitres. Everyday kitchen estimate only, not a lab, pharmacy, or medicine-dosing measurement.

How cooking measurements are converted

How to use the cooking measurement converter

  1. Type the amount from your recipe. Decimals (0.75), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (1 1/2) all work.
  2. Choose the unit the recipe uses in From and the unit you want in To. US units are listed first; metric cups and UK imperial units are labelled.
  3. Press Calculate. The converted amount appears, along with the same amount in every other unit, so you can use whichever spoon, cup, or jug you have.

Every unit has an exact size in millilitres. US measures all come from the US gallon, which is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly 3785.411784 mL. A US cup is one sixteenth of that, 236.5882365 mL. A US fluid ounce is one eighth of a cup, 29.5735295625 mL. A tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, 14.78676478125 mL, and a teaspoon is a third of a tablespoon, 4.92892159375 mL. A pint is 2 cups, a quart is 4 cups, and a gallon is 16 cups.

The page multiplies your amount by the from-unit's millilitres and divides by the to-unit's millilitres, in one step. It rounds that exact result half-up to two decimals once and never rounds an intermediate unit and converts again. If a non-zero result would show as 0.00, the page shows three significant figures instead, so 1 teaspoon in gallons shows as 0.00130 rather than zero.

A metric cup is 250 mL, as used in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. UK imperial measures come from the imperial gallon of exactly 4.54609 litres: an imperial fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL and an imperial pint is 568.26125 mL, which is 20 imperial fluid ounces. A UK pint is about 20 percent larger than a US pint.

This tool converts volume to volume only. Converting cups to grams, or to ounces of weight, needs the density of the ingredient: a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of honey. Use the weight converter for grams, ounces, and pounds, and the recipe scaler to multiply a whole recipe.

Worked example

1 US cup to millilitres. One cup is exactly 236.5882365 mL, which displays as 236.59 mL. The same cup is 16.00 tablespoons, 48.00 teaspoons, 8.00 US fluid ounces, 0.50 US pints, and 0.95 metric cups. Half a cup (1/2) is 118.29 mL. This is an everyday kitchen estimate only, not a lab, pharmacy, or medicine-dosing measurement.

Formula

result = amount × mL(from) ÷ mL(to), in one exact step. US: tsp 4.92892159375 · tbsp 14.78676478125 · fl oz 29.5735295625 · cup 236.5882365 · pint 473.176473 · quart 946.352946 · gallon 3785.411784 mL. Metric: mL 1 · L 1000 · metric cup 250 mL. UK imperial: fl oz 28.4130625 · pint 568.26125 mL. display = round2(exact result); a non-zero result that would show 0.00 shows 3 significant figures

amount
A number, fraction (3/4), or mixed number (1 1/2). Zero is allowed. Empty, non-numeric, and negative amounts are rejected.
mL(unit)
Exact millilitres in one of that unit (US from the 231-cubic-inch gallon; UK from the 4.54609-litre gallon).
round2
Half-up to 2 decimals, applied once to the exact result.

Disclaimer

Everyday kitchen estimate only, not a lab, pharmacy, or medicine-dosing measurement. This page converts volume units through exact millilitre values and rounds the display half-up to two decimals. It does not convert volume to weight, because that depends on the ingredient.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

Sixteen. A US cup is 8 US fluid ounces and each fluid ounce is 2 tablespoons, so 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons. Half a cup is 8 tablespoons, a quarter cup is 4 tablespoons, and a third of a cup is 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

Three. A US tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons, so 1 teaspoon is one third of a tablespoon, shown as 0.33. A teaspoon is 4.93 mL and a tablespoon is 14.79 mL.

How many mL are in a cup?

A US customary cup is exactly 236.5882365 mL, shown as 236.59 mL. A metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, is 250 mL. US nutrition labels use a rounded 240 mL cup. If a recipe comes from another country, check which cup it means; the difference is about 6 percent.

Can I convert cups to grams with this tool?

No. Cups, tablespoons, and millilitres measure volume, while grams and ounces of weight measure mass. How much a cup weighs depends on the ingredient and how it is packed: a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar or honey. This tool converts volume to volume only. Use the weight converter for grams, ounces, and pounds, or weigh the ingredient on a kitchen scale.

What is the difference between a fluid ounce and an ounce?

A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL and a UK imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL, while a weight ounce is 28.35 grams. Recipes that list liquids in ounces usually mean fluid ounces; for dry ingredients listed in ounces, use a kitchen scale and the weight converter.

Are UK and US pints the same?

No. A UK imperial pint is 568.26 mL (20 imperial fluid ounces), while a US pint is 473.18 mL (16 US fluid ounces, or 2 cups). One UK pint is about 2.40 US cups. Choose UK imperial pints in the From box when a British recipe lists pints.

Can I use this for medicine doses?

No. Household spoons vary a lot in size. This is an everyday kitchen estimate only, not a lab, pharmacy, or medicine-dosing measurement. Use the dosing syringe or cup that comes with the medicine and follow the label or your pharmacist.
