Discount Calculator

Enter an original price and a percentage discount to see the sale price and how much you save. Optionally enter a tax percentage to calculate tax on the discounted sale price and the total after tax. Amounts are displayed in dollars ($); no currency conversion, shipping, or additional fees are included.

Calculate a discounted price

Tax applies to the discounted sale price. Leave blank for no tax.

How discounts are calculated

A percentage discount reduces the original price by that percentage. Divide the discount rate by 100 and multiply by the original price to calculate the savings. Subtract those savings from the original price to get the sale price. Optional tax is calculated on that sale price, not the original price. Original price, savings, and tax use round-half-up rounding to cents: a half-cent rounds upward. Rounded savings are subtracted and rounded tax is added using integer cents, so the displayed totals agree. Leave the tax field blank for no tax.

Worked example

With the default $100 original price and 20% discount, you save $20.00 and the sale price is $80.00. Without tax, the total remains $80.00. Entering 7.5% tax adds $6.00 on the $80.00 sale price, for a total of $86.00. For a $79.99 item with a 12.5% discount and no tax, savings round to $10.00 and the sale price is $69.99.

Formula

Savings = original price × (discount percentage ÷ 100); Sale price = original price − savings; Tax = sale price × (tax percentage ÷ 100); Total after tax = sale price + tax

Not financial advice

General arithmetic only, not financial or tax advice. Results apply one discount and optional user-entered tax on the sale price. Tax defaults to zero; no tax rate or jurisdiction-specific rule is inferred. Shipping, fees, and other promotions are excluded. Round-half-up cents rounding is not a guarantee of a merchant's currency-specific rounding rules or final checkout total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discounted price?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the savings. Subtract the savings from the original price. A 20% discount on 100 saves 20 and gives a sale price of 80.

Can I use a decimal discount such as 12.5%?

Yes. Enter any finite discount between 0 and 100 percent, including decimals. For example, a 12.5% discount on 79.99 saves 10.00 after rounding and gives a sale price of 69.99.

How does optional sales tax work?

Enter a nonnegative tax percentage to apply tax to the discounted sale price. For example, $100 with a 20% discount gives an $80.00 sale price; 7.5% tax adds $6.00 for a total of $86.00. Leave tax blank or enter zero to omit it. Shipping and fees are not included.

How are amounts rounded?

Original price, savings, and tax are rounded to cents using round-half-up: a half-cent rounds upward. For example, $10.075 rounds to $10.08, and 5% tax on $0.10 rounds from $0.005 to $0.01. Rounded savings are subtracted from the rounded original price, and rounded tax is added to the sale price.

Can I combine two discounts by adding their percentages?

Not generally. Two successive discounts apply to different price bases. This calculator applies one discount only; use the result of the first calculation as the original price for a second calculation if the merchant applies them successively.

What happens with a 0% or 100% discount?

A 0% discount leaves the original price unchanged before tax. A 100% discount makes the sale price and tax zero. Original price must be greater than zero, discount must be between 0 and 100 percent, and optional tax must be nonnegative.
