Acreage Calculator

Find the area of a rectangular field. Enter length and width in one unit mode: feet or meters. The same mode applies to both sides, so a length in feet is never multiplied by a width in meters. Area is length times width. Feet mode shows square feet, acres, square meters, and hectares. Meters mode shows square meters, hectares, acres, and square feet. Each figure is rounded half-up to two decimals from the exact area, not from another rounded figure. This is field area only, not yield, seed, or chemical advice.

How it works

Find the area of a rectangular field. Enter length and width in one unit mode: feet or meters. The same mode applies to both sides, so a length in feet is never multiplied by a width in meters. Area is length times width. Feet mode shows square feet, acres, square meters, and hectares. Meters mode shows square meters, hectares, acres, and square feet. Each figure is rounded half-up to two decimals from the exact area, not from another rounded figure. This is field area only, not yield, seed, or chemical advice.

Worked example

A field 100 feet by 435.6 feet. The product is exactly 43,560 square feet, which is exactly 1 acre, shown as 43560.00 square feet and 1.00 acre. Square meters are 43,560 × 0.09290304 = 4,046.8564224, which displays as 4046.86. Hectares are 4,046.8564224 ÷ 10,000 = 0.40468564224, which displays as 0.40. That is not 1.00 hectare. Turning the rounded 0.40 hectare back into acres would say about 0.99 acre, and that is not what this page does.

Formula

Area = length × width, in one unit mode (feet or meters) for both sides. Feet: square feet = L × W; acres = square feet / 43560; square meters = square feet × 0.09290304; hectares = square meters / 10000. Meters: square meters = L × W; hectares = square meters / 10000; acres = square meters / 4046.8564224; square feet = square meters / 0.09290304. Each display is round2 of its own exact value. round2 is half-up to 2 decimals, the same helper as concrete round2 and discount roundMoney. Do not chain a rounded figure into the next.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre is 43,560 square feet. A field that is 100 feet long and 435.6 feet wide is 100 × 435.6 = 43,560 square feet, which is exactly 1 acre. This page shows that as 43560.00 square feet and 1.00 acre. Acres are the exact square feet divided by 43,560, then rounded half-up to two decimals on their own.

Can I enter the length in feet and the width in meters?

No. Feet and meters modes do not mix. One unit selector applies to both length and width. Choose feet, and both sides are feet. Choose meters, and both sides are meters. If you measured one side in feet and the other in meters, convert both sides to the same unit before you calculate. A missing unit mode is rejected, and so is a length or width that is 0, negative, blank, or not a number.

Is 1.00 acre the same as 1 hectare?

No. One acre is about 0.40 hectare, not 1 hectare. The 100 ft by 435.6 ft field is exactly 1.00 acre. Its square meters are 43,560 × 0.09290304 = 4,046.8564224, which displays as 4046.86. Hectares are that exact square-meter figure divided by 10,000, which is 0.40468564224, and that displays as 0.40. It does not display as 1.00. If you took the already-rounded 0.40 hectare and turned it back into acres, you would get about 0.99 acre, not the 1.00 acre this page shows. Each figure is rounded from the exact area, not from another rounded figure.

How do hectares compare with acres?

A hectare is 10,000 square meters. An acre is 43,560 square feet. They are not the same size: 1.00 acre is about 0.40 hectare, and 1.00 hectare is more than 2 acres. A field 100 meters by 100 meters is exactly 10,000 square meters, which is 1.00 hectare. Acres for that field are 10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 = 2.47105…, which displays as 2.47 acres, not 1 acre. Square feet, from the exact square meters divided by 0.09290304, display as 107639.10. A smaller example, 50 feet by 50 feet, is 2500.00 square feet, 0.06 acre, 232.26 square meters, and 0.02 hectare.

Does this tell me how much seed or fertilizer to apply?

No. This is field area only, not yield, seed, or chemical advice. It does not estimate bushels, seed rate, fertilizer, pesticide, or any chemical application. It only multiplies length by width for a rectangle and converts that area.
