Square Footage Calculator

Use this square footage calculator to work out the floor area of a room or a whole floor plan. Measure each rectangular part of the space, enter its length and width in feet and inches, decimal feet, or metres, and add as many sections as you need for an L-shaped or irregular room. The calculator shows the total in square feet, square meters, and square yards, with a breakdown for each section. The default room, 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft plus a 4 ft 3 in × 3 ft nook, is 137.75 sq ft (12.80 sq m, 15.31 sq yd). This is an everyday area estimate only, not a professional survey or appraisal measurement.

How square footage is calculated

How to use the square footage calculator

  1. Pick the units you measured in: feet and inches, decimal feet (for example 10.5), or metres.
  2. Split the floor into rectangles. A plain room is one section. An L-shaped room is two. A room with a bay or a closet is the main rectangle plus one section for each extra part.
  3. Measure the length and the width of each rectangle wall to wall at floor level and enter them. Use Add section for each extra part and Remove to delete one.
  4. Press Calculate. Read the total in square feet, square meters, and square yards, and check each section in the breakdown.

The area of a rectangle is length × width. In the feet modes, inches are turned into feet first by dividing by 12, so 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft. Each section's area in square feet is its length in feet times its width in feet. Square meters are square feet × 0.09290304, because one foot is exactly 0.3048 m and 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304. Square yards are square feet ÷ 9, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 = 9. In metre mode the area is metres × metres, and square feet are square meters ÷ 0.09290304.

The total is the sum of the exact section areas. Every figure on the page is rounded half-up to two decimals from its own exact value, once. Because of that, rounded section figures can differ from the rounded total by 0.01. In the default room the sections show 11.61 and 1.18 sq m (which add to 12.79), while the exact total of 12.79739376 sq m displays as 12.80.

This calculator measures area only and adds no waste or overage. When you buy materials, use the flooring calculator or the tile calculator, which add a waste allowance and count boxes or tiles, or the paint calculator for walls.

Worked example

Section 1 is 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft 0 in. Section 2 is 4 ft 3 in × 3 ft 0 in. 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, so section 1 is 12.5 × 10 = 125 sq ft. 4 ft 3 in is 4.25 ft, so section 2 is 4.25 × 3 = 12.75 sq ft. The total is 125 + 12.75 = 137.75 sq ft. In square meters, 137.75 × 0.09290304 = 12.79739376, which displays as 12.80 sq m. In square yards, 137.75 ÷ 9 = 15.3055…, which displays as 15.31 sq yd. This is an everyday area estimate only, not a professional survey or appraisal measurement.

Formula

section sq ft = length (ft) × width (ft), where ft = feet + inches ÷ 12. sq m = sq ft × 0.09290304 (1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, 0.3048² = 0.09290304). sq yd = sq ft ÷ 9 (1 yd = 3 ft, 3 × 3 = 9). metre mode: sq m = length (m) × width (m); sq ft = sq m ÷ 0.09290304. total = sum of the exact section areas; display = round2(exact), once

L, W
Length and width of one rectangular section, greater than 0. Inches must be 0 up to but not including 12.
0.09290304
Exact square meters in one square foot (0.3048 × 0.3048).
9
Square feet in one square yard.
round2
Half-up to 2 decimals, applied once to each exact figure. Rounded sections are never added.

Disclaimer

Everyday area estimate only, not a professional survey or appraisal measurement. This page multiplies the length and width you enter for each rectangular section, adds the exact section areas, and rounds each displayed figure half-up to two decimals. It adds no waste allowance; use the flooring or tile calculator for material quantities.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square feet for a room?

Measure the length and the width of the floor in feet and multiply them. A room 12 feet long and 10 feet wide is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. If a measurement has inches, divide the inches by 12 and add them to the feet first: 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, so 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft is 125 square feet.

How do I measure an L-shaped or irregular room?

Split the floor into rectangles that do not overlap, measure each one, and add a section for each. An L-shaped room with a 15 × 12 ft main area, an 8 × 6 ft leg, and a 5.5 × 4 ft alcove is 180 + 48 + 22 = 250 square feet. For a curved or angled part, measuring the smallest rectangle that encloses it gives a slightly larger figure, which is the safer side when you buy materials.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. That factor is exact, because one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304. So 120 square feet is 11.1483648 square meters, shown as 11.15. To go the other way, divide square meters by 0.09290304: 14 square meters is about 150.69 square feet.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards: 137.75 square feet is 15.31 square yards. Carpet and some flooring are still priced per square yard in the US.

Why don't the section figures add up exactly to the total?

Each figure is rounded to two decimals on its own, from its exact value. The total adds the exact section areas and is rounded once at the end. In the default example the sections show 11.61 and 1.18 square meters, which add to 12.79, but the exact total is 12.79739376 square meters, which rounds to 12.80. Adding already-rounded numbers would make the total less accurate.

Should I add extra for waste?

Not on this page. It gives the measured floor area only. Flooring and tile are usually bought with some extra for cuts and breakage, and the right amount depends on the layout and the material. Use the flooring calculator or the tile calculator, which add a waste allowance and work out boxes or tiles.

Is this the same as the square footage on a listing or appraisal?

Not necessarily. Listings and appraisals follow their own measuring standards, which can measure from exterior walls and include or exclude areas such as stairs, garages, or rooms with low ceilings. This tool multiplies the dimensions you enter. It is an everyday area estimate only, not a professional survey or appraisal measurement.
